Melanie Luckman - Artistic Director
Mel is a theatre director based in Christchurch New Zealand. Cubbin Theatre Company is her brainchild, coming from a desire for specific theatrical experiences for her own young children. Mel wanted to create Cubbin because children deserve beautiful creative experiences to feed their souls and their imaginations just as much as grown ups do. Some of her inspirations in creating this work include Magda Gerber and Janet Lansbury, Replay Theatre Belfast, Julie Wylie, Anika Moa and her own children Milo and Fox.
Mel has a Masters in Theatre Arts (Directing) from Te Kura Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School and Victoria University Wellington. She is a previous Associate Director of the Court Theatre and is still freelancing as a theatre director for grownups, most recently of the acclaimed production of In The Next Room or the vibrator play by Sarah Ruhl for The Court Theatre.
Amy Straker - Marketing Co-ordinator
Amy is an actor, singer, song writer, musician and tutor. Her passion for sharing creativity with little ones grew after working at the Lewis Eady School of Music in Auckland. Her role as programme leader of Singing Rainbows was to expose tiny tots, under the age of 5, to different instruments, rhythm and sound. During her time there, Amy watched the children grow in confidence through curiosity and play. She relished their ability to be un-guarded and in the moment. Amy saw how the music made them connect with their carers and it inspired her to learn more!
As an actor Amy has worked professionally for over 12 years. As a singer she has recorded her own album under the name Amy Grace, an EP with her duo, The Swan Sisters, and has toured Aotearoa, Australia and London. As a songwriter Amy has collaborated with numerous talents around the world and written songs with people as young as the age of 3! Amy has worked as a tutor with The Court Theatre, Lewis Eady, Mount Eden Ballet Academy and Impact Dance School.
Amy is a proud member of Actors Equity and is delighted to be bringing theatre for the very young to Christchurch.
Hannah Wheeler - Producer
Whilst living and working for LATT Children’s theatre in Seoul, South Korea in 2013, Hannah saw her first baby theatre performance. Creating high quality, respectful and intelligent theatre for children has been an idea ever since and she is excited to be working alongside Mel and Amy to bring Cubbin Theatre Company to life.
Hannah loves singing and has been a member of the Fourth Choir in London. Performing highlights with them include Friends of Shakespeare’s Globe Christmas Concert at the Sam Wanamaker Theatre and Dark Lady, Tender Churl, a concert held on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death at Middle Temple Hall in 2016.
Most recently Hannah played the role of Mrs Daldry in the successful Court Theatre production of In The Next Room or the vibrator play.
Hannah is a graduate of NASDA and the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, New York. She enjoys chocolate milkshakes and mountain biking around beautiful New Zealand.
